3rd January 2017

Tonight we held our Print and Digital Image of the Year competition, we had 60 entries, 30 prints and 30 DPI's. These were judged by Mr. John Fletcher of Longridge, he had the task of choosing just 1 print and then 1 DPI from the top 60 images of 2016.

Its congratulations to Roger Johnstone ​who had the winning print, also congratulations to Andy Pritchard with the winning DPI.

It is with sadness that we have to announce the death of John Fryer. He passed away in his sleep on Tuesday January 3rd after a long period of nursing care.
Both John, and Mary his late wife, were long standing members of Nelson Camera Club and their contribution over the years as members of the committee was greatly appreciated. 
He will be remembered fondly by many.
The funeral service is at Burnley Crematorium on Friday 13th January at 14.20 pm.
Simon, his grandson extends an invite to any members who knew John and Mary.
Any donations in memory of John can be given to Pendleside Hospice​.

Our Syllabus Secretary Geoff Atkins has now published​​ the events up to the end of May 2017. Geoff has managed a very varied program with something for everyone, with great speakers on a variety of subjects, to competitions for the more competitive members among us.

We welcome non members to come along have a chat and a cup of tea on any of weekly meeting nights.​

Ken Wilmore wins the 5 Minute AV Competition with his really good Audio Visual Slideshow, Cosford Air Display. We had 14 AV's on the night an all the members voted for the one they enjoyed the most and Ken's was voted the winner.

Well done Ken.

Our Annual Dinner and Awards Presentation was held tonight at the ACE Centre in Nelson. Thirty five members attended. We all had a really good evening and once again the catering staff at the ACE Centre put on a really good meal. 

​Thanks to all who attended the Annual Dinner for making it such a good evening, and a really big thank you to all the staff at the ACE Centre for such a good meal and the excellent service ​they provided for us. Also a big thank you to Anne-Marie Imeson & Jean Greenwood for organizing the proceedings for the presentation of the awards. ​All the winning images can be seen on our competitions page

L&CPU Annual Club Digital Competition Results

​Entries from 44 clubs, these are our placings.


Colour Digital 19th Place with a score of 90 (1st Chorley with 101)


Mono Digital 36th Place with a score of 78 (1st Wigan 10 with 106)


Nature Digital 16th Place with a score of 88 (1st Wigan 10 with 108)


Final Club Ranking 19th with a score of 256

Winning club was Wigan 10 with a score of 308

​​ICPA Digital Knockout March 11th 2017

This external competition had a total entry from 15 clubs, all from the North West.

The winning club was Chorley with a total of 64 points.

Preston & Ribblesdale came  joint 2nd with 51 points​​ each, and Nelson Camera Club did very well gaining 4th place with 49 points.

We entered 10 images into the competition and they were marked on a round by round knockout basis.​​

​"Short Eared Owl" by Andy Pritchard reached the very last round in the knockout.

​Well done Andy.

This website is open to all our members to display their images in the "Galleries" section​ of the website and these images can be changed as and when a member wishes. So if you would like to have your own images on the website put 10 /15 images on a disc or a USB stick, give them to the webmaster and they will be added to the site.

Amendments to Competition Rules & Definition of Categories.

Following​ the L&CPU Annual General Meeting on the 26th February, once again there was quite a discussion on Definition of categories for the Nature section, and we have decided to change our rules and categories to stay in line with the L&CPU, so please go to the Competitions page to read the changes.​​ Also there has been a change to Digital Image sizes that can be entered. You can now enter digital images at 1600x1200 pixels, as well as 1400x1050 pixels. These sizes also stand for club competitions as well.

26th April


Tonight we held our first Print Competition of the year​, and we got a really good entry, with a total of 47 prints. The judge for the evening was Mr. Harry Emmitt CPAGB from Accrington CC.

B​ill Smith had a flying start​, taking 1st & 4th places, well done Bill.

Also​ congratulations to our newest member Mr. David Clegg, this was his first ever competition and got a well deserved 6th place.

Digital Image Competition No 1​ got off to a good start with 64 images, 46 in the Open category & 18 in the Nature category. Roger Johnstone did very well taking 1st place in each category, well done Roger. Go to Results 2017 to see all the winners, or click here to go straight there.

Tuesday 23rd May we held our 2nd print competition of the season, and our judge Mr. Mark Williams of Chorley once again had the task of choosing the top 6 images out of yet another good entry. The evening belonged to Mr. Howard Harrison. Howard entered 4 images and the judge chose 3 of those and placed them in the final six. Congratulations Howard.

It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Edward Charlesworth on June 13th 2017.

Edward was a long standing member of Nelson Camera Club who had served on the committee and as President .
He was well respected for his expertise in photography and helped many of our new members to establish themselves in the club.
He will be greatly missed.

Its with great sadness ​yet again that we have to announce the death of our oldest member Mr. Ron Jackson​ who passed away on 14th July 2017.

Ron was a keen member of Nelson Camera Club for more than 40 years.

His knowledge of landscape photography was extensive and loved to photograph Northern Scotland and the Lake District, but his Shangri-La was undoubtedly the Yorkshire Dales National Park. ​​

Ron always gave up his time freely​ and he regularly gave talks to societies in both Lancashire & Yorkshire.

​Anybody who knew him knew he was rarely lost for words. 

His funeral is next Friday, July 21st at 1 pm at the Central Gospel Mission, Goitside, Nelson BB9 7XD

There will be a Summer Trip next week  (Tuesday 25th July) to​​ Rufford Hall & Meresands Wood. Admission £8.50 for Rufford unless a National Trust Member.


This trip has been rescheduled from  6th June because of bad weather​.

Tuesday 22nd August ​we held our 3rd Print Competition of 2017 and it was judged by

​Mr. Ken Ainscow from Lytham St. Anne's.

Ken remarked that print competitions were in decline and that they were being taken over by digital competitions​, while there is nothing wrong with digital competitions he also remarked that you could not beat a good print, and that we as a club should carry on promoting competitions solely for prints. ICPA Annual Competition Results 2017

Nelson Camera Club has done extremely well in all sections which had an entry from 15 clubs.



In the Monochrome Print section we came 1st and have won the Toulmin Shield.  
Bill Smith was awarded 3rd place with 19 marks for "Bill-Self Portrait"



In the Colour Print section we came 2nd.
Bill Smith was awarded 1st place with a maximum 20 marks for "Clock Repairs"



In the Digital Projected Image section we came 4th.
Tony Mellor CPAGB was awarded 3rd place with 18 marks for " Sunset on the Fishing Hut"

Septembers Monthly​ print Competition was held on Tuesday 26th September, and once again another good entry from our members.

In the last 12 months Nelson Camera Club have managed to attract quite a few new members and its nice to see them taking an active part in competitions, especially print competitions​.

The evening started with a talk from accomplished photographer Nick Hilton.  Then, following a break for refreshments, we had an inter-club competition which Nick  judged, there was 7 North-West clubs that attended, each entering 4 images making a total of 28 digital images. Nick judged the comp in a knockout format of 4 rounds, and points were awarded to each image as to the round it went out in, 1 for round 1, 2 points for round 2 and so on.

Nelson Camera Club did extremely well finishing 2nd overall and just 3 points behind Bolton CC who won it. Congratulation to Bolton CC, and well done Nelson CC.​

Our Annual Themed Digital Image Competition was held tonight and the Theme for this year was " Dusk Till Dawn "​ chosen by Lesley Whittaker. Lesley won the honor of choosing this years theme by winning last years competition. We had 38 entries in the competition and Mr. Mike Davis from Rochdale did the judging. Mike had a wide range of subjects to choose from and finally choose the top 5 images.

Our last print competition​ of 2017 was held tonight and we invited Mr. John Fletcher CPAGB of Longridge to come along and judge it. John has been coming to Nelson CC for many years to do the judging in various competitions and he remarked on the quality of our members work, so a pat on the back to all who entered prints in tonight's competition.

 The L&CPU held their Annual Digital Knockout

competition on Saturday 18th November 2017.

41 clubs entered and Nelson came a very creditable 11th.

Tonight we held our last Digital Image Competition​ for 2017, we had 48 images in total, 36 in the General category and 12 in the Nature section.

Mr. Barry Noon from Accrington CC did the honors of judging​.

Our Syllabus secretary Mr. Geoff Atkins has been busy over the last couple of months arranging the Club Diary for the first half of 2018. Thanks to Geoff this is now complete and we will be having a wide variety of guest speakers and judges to look forward to over the coming months.
